Judge Goes Viral for Savagely Putting Rioters in Their Place
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai has strongly objected to Advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara’s reference to Justice Yashwant Varma as “Varma” during court proceedings. Justice Varma, who is embroiled in the infamous “cash in residence” controversy, continues to be a sitting judge of the High Court. This is not the first time that a CJI has reproached Nedumpara on his impropriety of conduct.
Strongly objecting to Nedumpara’s manner of address, CJI Gavai sternly reminded him to maintain decorum and address judges with appropriate respect. “Is he your friend? He is still Justice Varma. You are referring to a learned judge,” the CJI said.
The exchange of words between the CJI and the Advocate happened in the course of mentioning an urgent listing of a fresh writ petition seeking the registration of a FIR against Justice Varma.
Nedumpara said, "I don't think that greatness can apply to him. Matter has to be listed, "Don't dictate to the Court," the CJI shot back.
Nedumpara’s previous petitions in the matter had already been dealt with by the apex court. His first plea was dismissed in March due to the ongoing in-house inquiry. A subsequent petition, filed after former CJI Sanjiv Khanna forwarded the inquiry report to constitutional authorities, was disposed of in May with directions to first approach the Central Government.
