From August 11 Designated Seniors To Step Aside From Mentioning : CJI Opens Doors To Juniors

The Chief Justice of India(CJI) BR Gavai, has announced that starting next Monday, August 11, no designated Senior Advocate will be permitted to orally mention matters in Court No. 1. The announcement was aimed at empowering junior advocates to gain confidence before the courts. “Let juniors get opportunities’’ reiterated the CJI.

This decision was made during an exchange with Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who attempted to make an oral mention. The CJI emphasized the importance of providing opportunities to junior advocates, stating that the rule will come into effect next week to ensure everyone is informed.

When Singhvi responded to the announcement, the CJI acknowledged the high demand for this adjustment, further affirming that it would be enforced uniformly and that no senior counsel would be allowed to mention cases going forward.

Singhvi expressed his support for the idea, provided it was applied consistently, while the CJI confirmed the need for a formal notice to be circulated to prevent any surprises.

Although there was a suggestion to implement the rule across all courts, the CJI clarified that it will specifically apply to Court No. 1 for the time being, aiming to facilitate opportunities for junior advocates.
