A Historic Shift : Bombay HC To Get A ₹3,750-Cr Makeover And A New Address In Bandra East

The Maharashtra State Cabinet has sanctioned a whopping ₹3,750 crore for constructing a new Bombay High Court complex in Bandra East. This ambitious project, approved by the cabinet, plans to develop the sprawling complex on approximately 30.16 acres. The upgraded facility will feature 75 state-of-the-art courtrooms, chambers for judges, administrative offices, staff amenities, an arbitration and mediation center, a library, an auditorium, residential housing, and ample parking space. Recognized as a major infrastructure initiative by the cabinet, authorities have vowed to ensure the construction stays on schedule.

Currently, the primary venue of the Bombay High Court operates from its historic Gothic edifice, built in 1878. Originally meant for a mere 15 judges, the courthouse now accommodates 29 courtrooms and a sanctioned strength of 94 judges. Legal practitioners and litigants have frequently voiced concerns about the building being overcrowded, with congested corridors, undersized courtrooms, and insufficient storage, all of which impede the efficient functioning of the judicial complex. The new construction promises to alleviate these longstanding issues, enabling smoother judicial processes and improved facilities for all stakeholders involved.
