Elon Musk’s Feud With Brazilian Supreme Court Judge

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge recently ordered Brazil’s telecommunications regulator Anatel to shut down "X" after the billionaire Elon Musk failed to comply with an order to name a legal representative in Brazil.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk have been in a public feud for months as ‘X’ (formerly known as tweeter) failed to comply with legal orders to block certain accounts accused of spreading “fake news” and hate messages. ‘X’ claimed that Justice Moraes threatened to arrest one of company’s legal representatives in Brazil if “X” did not comply.

Justice Moraes ordered that the social media giant to be taken down immediately in Brazil. Shutting down the messaging platform could take days as Anatel has to communicate with telecommunications carriers to drop “X” traffic. Justice Moraes also froze financial assets of Elon Musk’s 'Starlink' by issuing an order to block the accounts of the satellite internet network that has rapidly expanded the number of users in Brazil. The judge’s motive was to cover unpaid fines amounting to $3.28 million that he had previously slapped on “X” for ignoring judicial orders.

A five-member panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court on September 2 voted unanimously to uphold the decision of Justice Moraes to block “X”, thus ruling the shut down social media platform in Brazil. Earlier Elon Musk had labelled Justice Moraes a “dictator”. The  social media platform “X” will now stand suspended till it complies with the orders of Justice Soares.
