Bar Vs. Bench: Lack Of Transparency in Transfer Of Judges Spurs Protest

The Advocates' Association, Bengaluru (AAB) has not taken the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation of transfer of four judges from Karnataka High Court to other High Courts too well. As a mark of protest the Bar Association has urged lawyers to refrain from attending court on Wednesday, April 23.

During a General Body meeting held on Tuesday, the Bar Association "unanimously resolved to boycott proceedings in the High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday".

Citing lack of transparency in the transfer decisions and highlighting the discontent within the legal community, as reasons for dissent, the AAB stated,

"This decision reflects the deep anguish and growing unrest among advocates over the repeated sidelining of Karnataka’s judiciary in key decisions."

The Association has also called upon the Advocates’ Associations at the Dharwad and Gulbarga benches to unite and support their initiative "to defend the integrity and independence of the judiciary."

To drive home the point, the Bar had also observed an hour-long work abstention on Tuesday.
