Judge Goes Viral for Savagely Putting Rioters in Their Place

Sanjay Roy, the accused in the RG Kar Rape-Murder Case, has been sentenced to Life Imprisonment by the Sealdah Court, which has also ordered ₹17 lakh in compensation for the victim’s parents.

Judge Anirban Das, 1st Addl. District Judge, had found Roy guilty under Sections 64 (Rape), 66 (Punishment for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim), and 103(1) (Murder) of the scope Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During the previous hearing, the quantum of punishment was to be delivered after hearing Roy’s statement.
A judgment spanning over 160 pages is anticipated to address the concerns raised by the complainant, the victim’s father, about the case and its investigation.
The punishment stems from the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the R.G. Kar hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024.The trial in the rape and murder case commenced in the Sessions Court on November 11, three months after the incident. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe from the Kolkata Police following the Calcutta High Court’s directive, had requested the “maximum punishment” for the accused.
