Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be next Chief Justice of India (CJI) as CJI Sanjiv Khanna sends proposal to Law Ministry. He is set to become the 52nd CJI and will take oath on 14th May 2025. His elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court came after his stint as a Judge of the Bombay High court for 16 years.

The collegium in recommending Justice Gavai as a Judge of the Supreme Court had specified that it was not only giving ‘due weight to seniority, integrity and merit but also ‘due representation’ in the Supreme Court. 

Justice Gavai will take oath as the second Chief Justice of India from the Scheduled Caste community in 15 years.
