Ajmer Court Seeks Response on Plea Alleging Shiva Temple Beneath Ajmer Dargah

On November 27, 2024, the District Court of Ajmer in Rajasthan issued notices to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Ajmer Dargah Committee in connection with a civil suit filed by Hindu Sena President Vishnu Gupta. The notice was issued by Civil Judge Manmohan Chandel, with the case scheduled for further hearing on December 20, 2024.

The suit, filed through Advocate Shashi Ranjan Kumar Singh, seeks directions for the ASI to survey the Ajmer Dargah and requests the removal of the Dargah Committee from the premises. The Ajmer Dargah houses the tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

Gupta's petition claims that the Dargah was constructed on the site of an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Bhagwan Shri Sankatmochan Mahadev, partly by altering existing structures and adding new ones. He asserts that architectural features, such as the roof design resemble Hindu structures.

It is further argued that the plaintiff has a vested interest in safeguarding the religious character of the Mahadev Temple in Ajmer, allegedly located at the site of the Dargah, from unlawful occupation by the Dargah Committee. The plea further asserts that a Shiva Linga is located beneath an underground passage within the complex. The suit argues that this infringes upon Hindus' constitutional right to worship under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

The plaintiff contends that the site originally housed the Mahadev Temple, and the suit seeks directives for the Union government to reconstruct the Bhagwan Shri Sankatmochan Mahadev Temple at the disputed location.
