Judge Goes Viral for Savagely Putting Rioters in Their Place
Kannada actress Ranya Rao, noted for her role in Maanikya, has been sentenced to one year of Preventive Detention under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) due to gold smuggling charges. The actress has also been denied the right to apply for bail during the entire duration of her Preventive Detention.
Arrested on March 3 with 14.8 kg of illegally imported gold, valued at ₹12.56 crore, she initially received default bail due to procedural lapses as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) failed to file the chargesheet within the mandated time. Despite it, she remained in custody due to an ongoing investigation under the COFEPOSA act. Earlier her bail applications had been denied by the Special Court for Economic Offences, the Session Court, and even the Karnataka High Court.
