Who’s Headed Where? Collegium Names Five New High Court Chief Justices

The Supreme Court Collegium convened on December 18, 2025, to recommend the elevation of five judges as Chief Justices of various High Courts across India. 

Mr. Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, currently serving at the Allahabad High Court, has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. The appointment follows the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice on January 9, 2026.

Smt. Justice Revati P. Mohite Dere from the Bombay High Court is slated for elevation as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This move is prompted by the transfer of the current Chief Justice.

Mr. Justice M.S. Sonak, also from the Bombay High Court, has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. It aligns with the retirement of the incumbent on January 8, 2026.

Mr. Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court is recommended as Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.

Mr. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo from the Orissa High Court is proposed as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

These elevations, governed by the collegium system under Article 124A, await formal government notification for implementation.
