Mr. Nawaf Salam, a former judge at the International Court of Justice, has been appointed as Lebanon's Prime Minister by President Joseph Aoun. Mr. Salam, who secured the backing of 78 out of 128 Members of Parliament, is a distinguished diplomat and lawyer known for his impartiality and reformist vision. His selection marks a much needed shift in Lebanon's political dynamics, reducing the influence of Hezbollah and raising hopes for much-needed reforms in the economically distressed nation.
This appointment follows the election of President Joseph Aoun, which ended a two-year power vacuum. Lebanon’s political landscape, long dominated by Hezbollah, has shifted after the group faced many setbacks, including a war with Israel and the loss of key allies in Syria. Mr. Nawaf Salam’s leadership is widely seen as a fresh opportunity to combat corruption and revive Lebanon’s economy.
