SC Criticises Nepotism Claims in Senior Advocate Designations

The Supreme Court addressed serious allegations of favouritism in the designation of 70 Senior Advocates by the Delhi High Court

Advocate Matthews J. Nedumpara, who filed the petition, claimed that relatives of judges were unfairly elevated to senior status. However, the Court strongly challenged these assertions, demanding clear evidence to support such claims.

The Bench, led by Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Viswanathan, expressed dissatisfaction with the petitioner’s submissions. It allowed time for the allegations to be reconsidered and removed, warning of consequences if baseless claims remained in the petition.

The judges stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism in the courtroom and urged the petitioner to focus on legal arguments rather than sensational claims.

The controversy also highlighted disagreements within the Delhi High Court’s selection process.

Senior Advocate Sudhir Nandrajog, a member of the Permanent Committee involved in the designations, raised concerns about the final list being circulated without his approval. Allegations of tampering with the original list have further complicated the matter, raising questions about transparency in the process.
