The Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu nominated Hon’ble Shri. Justice B.R. Gavai, a judge of the Supreme Court of India in line to become the Next Chief Justice of India, as Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) with effect from November 11, 2024, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice (Department of Justice) on November 8, 2024.
The Notification read as follows:
"In exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the President is pleased to nominate Hon'ble Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with effect from 11.11.2024."
Previously, this position was held by the current Chief Justice of India, Hon'ble Shri. Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
Under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was established to offer free legal services to the underprivileged segments of society and to arrange Lok Adalats for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
