In a historic move to enhance accessibility and transparency, the Supreme Court of India has launched a dedicated webpage- Landmark Judgment Summaries to provide citizens with summaries of its most significant judgments. This initiative marks a major stride in bridging the gap between the judiciary and the public, ensuring that vital legal decisions are comprehensible to all and fostering a more informed society.

The Supreme Court recognizes that complex legal language and the length of judgments can be formidable barriers for citizens seeking to understand its rulings. To overcome these obstacles, the newly unveiled webpage, “Landmark Judgment Summaries,” aims to provide summaries that are “accurate” and written in “simple and clear language,” allowing “all persons to easily understand” the reasoning and outcomes of major decisions. These summaries are crafted to provide not only the conclusions but also the rationale behind the Court’s decisions, thus enhancing transparency.

The “Landmark Judgment Summaries” webpage, accessible through the Supreme Court's official website, features a “year-wise curated list of significant judgments” that are deemed important to public interest. Each case summary is identifiable by a “subject line that provides a one-line description” of what the case is about, allowing readers to quickly locate cases of interest. Furthermore, the webpage provides direct links to “view the full judgment,” along with “video recordings of the hearings and oral transcripts of the arguments, if available,” offering a comprehensive understanding of the Court's decisions.

Prepared by the Centre for Research and Planning of the Supreme Court, these summaries reflect the Court’s objective of ensuring that “all persons can easily understand its significant decisions.” The webpage will be continually updated to include both recent and historical judgments that hold public importance.
