Cash Scam Controversy Continues: SC To Hear Plea Seeking Registration Of FIR Against Justice Yashwant Varma

The Supreme Court division bench of Justice Abhay S.Oak and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan on 28th March, 2025 is scheduled to hear a plea seeking the registration of FIR against Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma in connection with the alleged cash controversy.

The plea, filed by Advocate Mathews Nedumpara, challenges the 1991 K. Veeraswami ruling, which mandates prior approval from the Chief Justice of India (CJI) before initiating criminal proceedings against a sitting High Court or Supreme Court judge. Nedumpara argues that Justice Varma should face prosecution rather than a mere transfer.

According to media reports, a fire at Justice Varma's residence on March 14 unexpectedly led to the discovery of unaccounted cash. The incident sparked corruption allegations against Justice Varma, who has refuted these claims, asserting that it seems to be a deliberate conspiracy to implicate him.

The Chief Justice of India initiated an internal investigation on 22nd March, 2025, forming a three-member committee. A video of the burnt cash recovery ,was shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner, which is now available on the Supreme Court's website.

Additionally, the Supreme Court published a report from the Delhi High Court Chief Justice on the given incident and also Justice Varma's response.

Amid rising pressure, the Supreme Court Collegium had resolved on 24th March, 2025, to transfer Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court, where he was originally appointed but the move has caused unrest and resistance from the Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA).
