Farmer’s Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal Directed Not to Block Highways or Inconvenience Public

Protesting farmer's leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal was told not to obstruct highways or cause inconvenience to the public in the ongoing farmers’ agitation held against the Central Government’s stance on Minimum support price(MSP) for crops. The court of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court made the observations while hearing a Habeas Corpus petition with respect to the protesting farmer’s alleged illegal detention.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal had planned a fast unto death and was allegedly removed from the protest site at Khanauri border, adjoining Delhi, until his demand for MSP for crops was met. He was thereafter admitted to a hospital in Ludhiana and subsequent to this he moved court claiming that his admittance to the hospital was an act of coercion and amounted to detention. Following this he was released and he rejoined the protest.

Disposing of the plea after due consideration of facts and developments the bench asserted that “while peaceful protests are a fundamental right in a democracy, there must be a sense of responsibility when engaging in such protests”.
