Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, with his term commencing on May 14, 2025, following the retirement of the current CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, on May 13. 

The announcement was made by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Justice Gavai will become the second Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste community, after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who held the position until 2010. 

His tenure as Chief Justice will continue until his retirement on November 23, 2025.
