Kunal Kamra Gets Transit Bail till 7 April

On March 28, 2025, the Madras High Court granted Transit Anticipatory Bail till April 7, 2025 to stand-up comic Kunal Kamra in connection with a criminal case registered against him in Mumbai for remarks that allegedly insulted Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Justice Sunder Mohan passed the order after noting that Kamra is unable to approach courts in Maharashtra due to threats of physical violence against him by political party workers.

The Court while allowing interim anticipatory bail noted "Petitioner (Kunal Kamra) has prima facie satisfied this court that he is unable to approach courts in Maharashtra for protection. Petitioner has produced newspaper reports (of threats being issued to him),”

J. Sunder Mohan granted Kamra the relief on the condition that he should execute a bond to the satisfaction of the judicial magistrate at Vanur in Villupuram district. The judge also issued notice to the Khar Police i.e., the Second Respondent and posted the matter to April 7, 2025.

Kamra was booked by the Khar Police for offences under Sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) (public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Shiv Sena legislator Muraji Patel after Kamra in his stand up show sang a parody song, referencing to a ‘gaddar’ (traitor), which was seemingly to denote Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s decision to quit the Shiv Sena Party led by Uddhav Thackeray and join the Bharatiya Janata Party. This action had led to the splitting of the once united Shiv Sena, with Shinde’s supporters rising to power in Maharashtra through a coalition with the Bhartiya Janata Party.
