Judge Goes Viral for Savagely Putting Rioters in Their Place

On April 1,2025, the Supreme Court rejected a petition of Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, against the Gujarat government's ₹1,200-crore plan to redevelop the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal dismissed the Special Leave Petition, stating that it took almost 2.5 years to file the petition, which was a long delay.
In his petition Tushar Gandhi argued that the redevelopment plan goes against the principles of Gandhian heritage. He expressed his concern that the ₹1,200-crore project would change the landscape of the historic ashram and compromise its essence. While around 40 existing buildings would be preserved, he claimed that the remaining buildings, around 200 in total, will either be demolished or reconstructed.
In 2022, the Gujarat High Court dismissed Gandhi's plea after the government assured that the core section of the ashram would remain untouched. It also expressed the view that the redevelopment project would uphold Mahatma Gandhi's principles and philosophy, benefiting humanity as a whole. The revamped Gandhi Ashram, it believed, would become a center of learning for people of all ages.
