Judge Goes Viral for Savagely Putting Rioters in Their Place
On March 28, 2025, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra moved the Madras High Court seeking interim protection from pre-arrest in connection with a FIR registered in Mumbai over his alleged "traitor" remark against Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
A Zero FIR, lodged by Shiv Sena MLA Muraji Patel, invokes Sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) (public mischief), and 356(2) (defamation) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Though Kamra did not name Shinde, party workers claim he indirectly referred to him as a traitor.
Following the remarks, Shiv Sena workers vandalized Mumbai’s Habitat Studio, where Kamra had performed. Twelve people were arrested and later granted bail. Kamra’s advocate while mentioning the matter informed the court that he has been receiving death threats.
Kamra, a permanent resident of Villupuram, contends that the Madras High Court has jurisdiction over the matter. The case was urgently mentioned before Justice Sunder Mohan, who is set to hear it after the recess today.
