Advocate Escorted Out In Case Against Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi

On October 15, 2024  the Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking an inquiry against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, following a heated exchange between the Bench and petitioner Arun Ramchandra Hublikar. Hublikar, who accused Justice Gogoi of interfering in a judgment related to his illegal termination, refused to leave the courtroom after the plea was dismissed, prompting the judges to call security to escort him out.

The Bench, comprising Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, expressed clear frustration over Hublikar’s persistent filings. Justice Trivedi remarked, “We are going to put an end to this. So many applications, one after the other,” before rejecting the case outright.

Hublikar argued that Justice Gogoi’s interference had ruined his life, submitting, “Justice Gogoi unwarrantedly interfered in a judgment. He has made my life miserable by interfering in an order passed in my favor regarding my illegal termination.”

Despite the dismissal, Hublikar continued his protest, declaring, “At least I should get justice before my death.” The Bench was resolute, replying, “Sorry, we cannot interfere. Your petitions are dismissed.”

When Hublikar refused to stop arguing and leave, Justice Trivedi instructed, “Call security. Don’t compel us to take action against you,” and Hublikar was escorted from the courtroom by security personnel.

In an earlier hearing on September 30, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had also rebuked Hublikar for including Justice Gogoi as a respondent in the case, stressing that it was inappropriate to name a former judge in a public interest litigation (PIL).

The Court’s final dismissal of the petition highlights its strong stance against frivolous accusations aimed at former members of the judiciary, drawing a decisive close to Hublikar’s persistent legal battle.
