Allahabad HC Sets Aside Afzal Ansari's Conviction, Allows Him to Continue as MP

In the high-profile Sheena Bora murder case, the Supreme Court has given a final extension of nine months to complete the trial, making it clear that no further requests for more time will be allowed.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh passed this order after considering a letter dated February 5, 2026, from the Special Judge of the CBI court at the City Civil and Sessions Court in Greater Bombay, who had asked for more time to finish the trial. The Court accepted the request but set a strict deadline, stating this would be the last extension.
The bench held, "Considering the prayer made, the time to conclude the trial stands extended by nine months while making it clear that no further prayer seeking extension of time will be entertained."
Brief facts of the case:
The case is about the 2015 murder of Sheena Bora, which was allegedly carried out by her mother, Indrani Mukerjea. The Central Bureau of Investigation investigated the case and made arrests after one of the accused turned approver in 2015.
In 2022, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to Mukerjea, noting that she had already spent six and a half years in custody and that the trial was likely to finish soon.
