Allahabad HC Sets Aside Afzal Ansari's Conviction, Allows Him to Continue as MP

The Union Law Ministry said on Friday that in the last 10 years, the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) received 8,360 complaints against serving judges.

The matter was raised in the Lok Sabha on Friday by Matheswaran VS, a Member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He asked for details of complaints involving corruption, sexual misconduct, or other serious impropriety against judges of the High Courts and the Supreme Court.
He also asked whether the Government has any system other than the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) to collect complaints against judges, and whether it plans to issue guidelines to systematically record and monitor complaints to ensure accountability.
Responding to the question, Arjun Ram Meghwal (Minister of Law & Justice) stated that the CJI receives complaints against Supreme Court judges through an “In-house procedure,” while the Chief Justice of each High Court receives complaints against High Court judges.
The Minister then tabled information received from the Supreme Court regarding complaints received in the CJI’s office. According to this data, the highest number of complaints were received in 2024, during the tenure of former CJI Dr DY Chandrachud and former CJI Sanjiv Khanna.
However, the Minister did not respond to the MP’s question on whether the Government proposes to issue guidelines or take steps to ensure systematic recording, monitoring, and accountability of complaints against members of the higher judiciary.
