Allahabad HC Sets Aside Afzal Ansari's Conviction, Allows Him to Continue as MP
The Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court expressed serious concern over the alarming issue of illegal drug and cigarette sales in close proximity to schools and colleges in the city. This move was prompted by articles published in the Marathi daily "Dainik Sakal," which highlighted the activities of certain offenders involved in the sale of prohibited substances targeting young, impressionable students.
The bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Yanshivraj Khobragade, noted that the reports detailed how these offenders lure youth into the consumption of drugs and cigarettes, paving the way towards their addiction and physical deterioration.
“Considering the aforesaid reporting of such sale and use of drugs, we deem it appropriate to take cognizance of the news items and we accordingly direct the learned Registrar (Judicial) of this Court to register a Suo Moto Public Interest Litigation. Copies of both these editions of Dainik Sakal, dated 14.06.2025 and 16.06.2025, shall be placed on record”, said the Judges.
Additionally, Senior Advocate P.R. Katneshwarkar was designated as Amicus Curiae to assist with the case. The court lauded the efforts of the media, particularly the reporters of Dainik Sakal, for bringing this pressing issue to light. They urged law enforcement to take serious note of the issue and take measures in the interest of public service, ensuring community safety against such detrimental activities.
