Law Student Sues OP Jindal Global University For Failing Him Over Ai Generated Submissions: Punjab & Haryana Issues Notice To University

Academic Integrity vs. Artificial Intelligence?

The Punjab and Haryana High Court have sought a reply from the O.P. Jindal Global University in response to a LL.M. student's petition challenging the decision of the university, which declared his submission in an exam as ''A.I.-generated."

Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri has listed the matter for further hearing on November 14.

The learned counsel for the petitioner argued that the petitioner, an LL.M. student at O.P. Jindal Global University, was accused of plagiarism, leading to an Unfair Means Case (UMC) by the UMC Committee.

Despite appealing this decision, university regulations require that the Controller of Examinations must find prima facie merit before an appellate hearing can proceed. However, in the impugned order, the Controller stated that no prima facie case was made to form an appellate committee.

The petitioner’s counsel emphasized that the relevant ordinances underpinning this decision were neither provided to the petitioner nor available on the university’s website, despite multiple requests. This lack of access deprived the petitioner of an opportunity to counter the plagiarism allegations.

The accusation, based on an AI evaluation, claimed 88% copying, though no details or provisions for this process were supplied to the petitioner.
