Allahabad HC Sets Aside Afzal Ansari's Conviction, Allows Him to Continue as MP

The Delhi High Court recently issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Central government, and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on a petition filed by an army officer seeking an investigation into alleged corruption within the Indian Army.

Justice Prateek Jalan directed the authorities to submit their replies within four weeks and scheduled the matter for further hearing on May 19.
Officer Seeks Probe:
The Court was hearing a plea filed by Lieutenant Colonel Sumit Sheoran, who sought a court-monitored CBI investigation into the allegations he raised against officers of the Indian Army.
He contended that while posted in New Delhi, he discovered significant financial irregularities in procurement done under the Annual Contingent Grant (ACG).
Misuse of Funds Alleged:
According to his petition, public funds were allegedly misused through manipulated procurement procedures, falsified documentation, and diversion of government assets. It was also claimed that items purchased using public money were falsely shown as belonging to officers’ messes, and that procurement limits were split to evade scrutiny.
“Acting in discharge of his duty, the petitioner submitted a series of complaints beginning 06.09.2024, supported by documentary material and clearly attributing roles to specific officers. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, no action was taken by any authority, thereby enabling continuation of offences and destruction of evidence. The inaction was not accidental but part of a pattern of deliberate suppression, as the very officers against whom complaints were made were part of the same command structure responsible for acting upon them,” it was submitted.
Cyber Intrusion Claim:
Additionally, he alleged that his computer system was accessed without authorisation, suggesting a possible targeted cyber intrusion.
Sheoran stated that he had filed a detailed complaint with the CBI in January 2025, but no FIR was registered.
He further claimed that he faced retaliation after making the complaints, including negative performance reports and a transfer to Nagpur.
